What We Wear to the Beach || Rebekah Edition

Hey! How did you like Cassie's post yesterday? Well, here goes mine!
This skirt has a story. Cassie bought it for me. [When I wasn't with her.] When she came home all happy with her find, I s'pose I wasn't too...enthusiastic? I just thought,"Hmm... It's a big, blue, {weird!} skirt."   I never even tried it on.
Until...
Until we went to the beach. And I loved it! It was super flowy and not quite as weird as I remembered...
We went to the beach on Mother's Day. Which was the day after Tulip Time ended. Which is why we all went. Except Mom that is! She stayed home to sleep. :-D

This Convoy of Hope t-shirt matched my skirt [My big{flowy} blue {cobalt} weird {modest} skirt!] perfectly.

Since we weren't actually going to the beach to swim (There was still ice floating a couple hundred feet out!) I just wore a regular t-shirt instead of one of our many 'swim-shirts' like Cassie wore.

There is an abundance of fossil rocks to be found along the beach.

Since it was flowy and since we were taking pictures...

I borrowed these white sandals from Mom on the way out the door... without asking... while she was sleeping... :-P

The skirt actually had an attached slip! Also, I didn't want my shirt to look frumpy, so I tied the excess fabric with a rubber band and tucked it in!

Are you hot from just looking at this???
Okay! Time for: "Bekah's tips, links, and opinions convictions!"

#1: tips!
  • If you want to be modest, don't wear a bikini. Or is that an opinion?  ;-}
  • Wear leggings under your swim-skirt.
  • For modesty and UV light protection, don't wear a sleeveless. Unless you enjoy slathering sunscreen on! Blagh!
  • If you don't want to wear an undershirt, make sure your neckline is higher than you would normally wear.
  • Don't bring your obnoxious forever-a-puppy Saint Bernard to the beach. If you have one that is...
  • Bring a beach umbrella and stay under it the whole time.
  • Don't wear flip-flops if you value the skin on the bottom of your feet.
  •  Think of some better tips than I've given you!
  • If you don't want to look like a complete homeschool nerd when visiting the beach then check out #2! Or if you do want to... depends. :-D

#3 My Convictions.

Okay, to start off, since the Bible doesn't doesn't have a book about "What to wear to go swimming", it gets a little complicated when you try to instruct someone what is modest and what is not. That's where convictions come in. Everyone has to have their own. I found that out rather the hard way. Without elaborating on that, it's okay to have your own opinion as well. Just don't insist it is the 11th commandment for everyone to dress exactly the same as you. With that said, my personal understanding is that your modesty standards should remain the same wherever you are. If you are okay with wearing a bikini to the beach, then you should be okay with showing that much skin at church. If you think you shouldn't show your knees in the Lord's house then you shouldn't show your knees at the beach. [Whether you wear leggings with a shorter skirt or something similar to what Cassie and I wear.] Dress for the occasion but don't dress just for who you'll be seeing! Example: "I just got these really cute mini-shorts! I wish I could wear them to church today! Oh well... I'll just wear them when I go bowling with the youth group tomorrow..."
I realize what I've been saying is a bit extreme but isn't that what being a Christian is all about? Obeying what God lays on your heart to do instead of yielding to your own wishes and wants? Some of you may think this is getting a little deep. I mean, why is it so important to be modest? It's just skin, everyone knows you've got it! *But if God tells you to do something, that it will honor Him if you obey, than shouldn't you just do it

My conviction is that nothing from the knees up and shoulders down should be put on public display for all to see.

What is yours?

  2. Wonderful post Rebekah!
Our modesty convictions are pretty similar to yours, though we are sometimes okay with skirts being knee length. I had never thought about what you said about whatever you wear on the beach should have the same modesty as when you go before the Lord. Thank you so much dear friend!

  3. Thank you for this Rebekah. This really encouraged me. My mom doesn't really see a need to wear a skirt to the beach (even though I feel the need) so instead I wear board shorts that are really long on me and swim short that comes all the way up to my neck. It is not turtles neck though. It is from the roxy brand it is very cute.
