Magazine Monday // Peterson's, November 1869

Hello everyone! The summer months are already passing by so quickly, are they not? Brigid of the Boyer Family Singers and I are already here again to share some pages of magazines from years past that we have picked up on our comings and goings. Won't you take a peek?






I'd been quite unsure if I would be able to carry on with these Magazine Monday posts because of how low my stash is getting; you all have just about seen all that I have! But "luckily" enough, my Mom has a stack of these Peterson's additions ranging from the year 1859 through 1879! I selected the one that was best in shape as well as how well it covered the categories and snapped a few photos to share!

The first page of the magazine(s) have a printed sketch that illustrates a short story located in the back pages of each addition. The photo above is the essence that captures the story dubbed 'The Messenger of Love'. Just one of a few stories that each copy included usually had a photo.



The next pages sometimes had a fold out (some did not have need of such an option) of some such stitchery pattern. One of the reasons I choose this particular copy to share is so you could see just that and how well this one is still intact! I also *adore* that the super delicate piece of parchment that covers the illustration is still doing it's job some 140 years later!






The pages that follow are just what they appear to be; ladies and girls latest fashions of that decade. Seeing pages like these from a magazine that an average girl would read and drool over, seems to make all the difference to me while studying over vintage and antique clothing. It just makes it more real and exciting I guess.



In most copies we realized they would also include a song or ballad, like the one above.




Before I started going page by page as I choose which ones to share, I hadn't realized that one story in the back included my very name in it's title! How delightful, eh? And for me not to even realize beforehand?! :)

Of course I had to take a bit of the afternoon to read through the tale before commencing with the post. The story is quite epic; a trio of girls are overheard concocting a plan to utterly tongue tie a man they despised for his uppity behavior by betting packs of gloves and candies to the ringleader to throw a Leap Year party and propose to the tyrant. Have you guessed the ending yet? She does not loose her courage to conduct such a feat, but as she "pops the question" the other two friends cannot hold back their laughter behind closed hall doors, and to make things worse, Mr so and so, decides to accept! Oh goodness! He feels terrible for doing so just hours later by taking such advantage of being in the right place at the right time, and tells her so, insisting to buy at least the gloves and goodies that were bet. And, like all good tales of quarrelers do, they realize "the worst pain of my [their] mad frolic last night was, because I thought I had given my love unsought." The ending is quite predictable from hence forth. Haha!



The back cover either includes advertisements, like this one, or another illustration of some kind. All in all, these magazines are so delightful to flip through. The size is smaller, the drawings dramatic, and the stories epic and romantic. If I don't happen to come across any other copies of a magazine to share, I'll be sure to snatch another copy of Peterson's as I'm sure none would be disappointed! :)
