HSF: Tops and Toes | Dutch Staphorst Hat

Hey all! Today I have a little  sewing project to share, for Historical Sew Fortnightly of-course!

Yes, yes, I know that this particular challenge is indeed the next one coming, but you see, I was all along thinking that this was the one coming up! So once I realized that I had made a mistake I decided to just share this anyway and then share today's real challenge (fairytale inspired) next round. Then I will be back on track with y'all!

 SO what is this project!?
This is a replica of a hat that's costume represents a provenance in Overijssel, that is Staphorst, in our Tulip Time festival here in the Holland area. I had wanted this costume (complete costume photo far below) for a while now so finding one at the Dutch Costume Resale was great! Each costume that is worn during our festival is hand sewn and getting your hands on certain (most) patterns is very difficult.
So once I had found the costume I had admired for so long, I was all but happy, except for the fabric of the hat and bib. It just looked cheap and very unauthentic which is not only frowned upon by me but also the Dutch Heritage Show that we are participating in this year. Plus the hat it came with was far too big- I knew that I needed to do something. After talking with the director of The Show, who also happens to be a Dutch costume director, I seam-ripped the hat to get the pattern and was given pages of instruction and history on it!
I thought "Why not 'kill two birds with one stone' and make this be my 'Tops and Toes' creation?"
As you can see from the photos, this was a fairly easy project, featuring the traditional solid dark background floral fabric and bright red piping. Finding fabric for this was not exactly easy plus I was very picky! When I found this at our local Fields Fabric's I was so happy- it was precisely what I had been looking for!

Needed information for the challenge:

The Challenge: Create an accessory that goes on your head, or on your feet.

Fabric: Less than one half yard of black back grounded calico. ($2 or so)

Pattern: Exclusive pattern.

Year: This style has been used for hundreds of years and is even still worn to this day!

1965: Mother and daughter from the 'oldfashioned' Dutch village Staphorst, still in black & white.
Notions: Black thread and twill tape with about one yard of red piping. (Stashed)

How historically accurate is it? This close, religious community in The Netherlands keeps to the old ways. A few still wear this costume as everyday dress today. In Staphorst, most of the sewing is done by hand and the floral pieces on the dress are sometimes hand painted. The skills necessary for making these clothes are taught to the girls in secondary school. The dark skirt and blouse is accented by a pretty red plaid scarf and a floral hat and dickey. For a very conservative community it is a bit surprising that this costume features a bright red petticoat.
The actual hat is very accurate. The hand painting that is talked about above would also be flourished onto the woman's hats. So to make this any more accurate I would have painted the flowers on.
I'm not sure where that would leave the percentage- 95% ?

This above is only slightly different than what you see below, which is how the Staphorst costume people wear for our festival is worn today. I am looking forward to showing our costumes to y'all come May!

Hours to complete: Less than one.

First worn: Not as of yet.

Total cost: Somewhere around $3.50.

Thanks for reading dears! I am hoping that this didn't bore you too much and that you were able to take away some unique knowledge!

Did you ever make a Dutch piece before?
What are you planning on making for this challenge?
Have you ever attended Tulip Time?

                                                                                  TTFN!

  9. Wow, the hat you sewed is nearly identical to the ones in the pictures--great job! Being a seamstress myself, I know it can sometimes be tough to find just the right fabric and such, for certain projects; but you pulled it off perfectly. :)

On another note, I just wanted to say that we (or I ;)) just became members to your blog--we're number fifty! I've actually been greatly enjoying your blog for quite some time (since August, I believe), though I have not commented until now. Keep up the good work! I am really enjoying your posts. Oh, and I love your new header!

    God bless,
    ~Esther

P.S. I would really love it if you would stop by our blog. We have not been posting as of late (actually, it has been months since we last updated it), but we're planning on changing that soon!
